Starting In Year 7 in Sept 2020

At Hornsey School for Girls we want to ensure that your daughter's move from primary to secondary school is as smooth as possible. We've already been lucky enough to meet many of you in our friendship afternoon. However, in current circumstances we haven't able to make the contact that we would wish to. We will be updating this page for you as a way of communicating and below we've added a parent admission booklet we would like emailed back to us if you have the facilities to do so ( There's also a booklet below for our new year 7's just to introduce them to key people and some of the ways the school works.

We are a committed 'tweeting school' and encourage all our families to join twitter to keep abreast of the things we do (@HornseySchool)

COVID-19 adjustments

Over the course of the holidays, we have undertaken an extensive programme of adaptation of our site to ensure it is Covid secure. As a result, we have a number of mobile handwashing units for student use, we have allocated 'zones' for year groups, and we have a enhanced cleaning and hygiene programme. A one way system is in place and movement around the site is restricted when students return. Our year groups are timetabled into separate 'bubbles' and will have break, lunch and lessons securely separated from other year groups. Classroom design has been amended to ensure we can operate within social distancing guidelines where practicable. We will explain all of this during the first induction afternoon on the 3rd September and there will be ample opportunity for Q+A from parents and carers.

Our new year 7 will have use of the site for Thursday and Friday and we hope that the time will support reduction in natural anxiety about return. Please note current government guidance does not recommend the use of masks in classrooms. Guidance may be amended and we will keep you informed if this is the case.

This is a significant change for all and we want to assure you that the safety of your daughter and our staff remain paramount at all times.

Uniform updates for new school term

Uniform can be purchased from  Please note in the current climate the uniform suppliers are offering appointments only so you cannot just walk in.

Students are always expected to arrive at school in full school uniform. We place a strong emphasis at Hornsey on our girls looking smart and ready to learn. Our policy for students arriving in incorrect uniform is to send them home to change. A signed & dated note should be provided if there is reason why this is not possible. We all take pride in Hornsey’s uniform we also need to ensure all students, from September are wearing:

  • School blazer
  • School jumper/pullover
  • White shirt
  • Black school skirt/trousers (pleated or A line skirt and no leggings or jeggings)
  • Plain black school shoes/ trainers*  (no heels or sandals)
  • Lanyard in year group colour (these will be given to new yr 7)
  • ID card
  • Black coat or jacket preferred over the school blazer

*Please note that black trainers are a change to our uniform policy and is being trialled for a full term following consultation and requests from our student leadership team. If this change is positive and we do not see a rise in uniform infringements/ or conflict as a result of this, we will adopt these changes permanently.

Other changes to the uniform agreed to be trialled for a term are:

  • Piercing:  nose studs - 1 only (no nose rings) – which must be removed for PE
  • No colour limitations to hair dye.

The student leadership team have worked incredibly hard to consult and work with students to update the uniform policy. If students wish to see the changes fully embedded they will need to act responsibly for them to be adopted. We will be monitoring how these changes impact on school standards.
