Regional Finals - Speak Out!

Hornsey School for Girls, proudly competed in the Regional Speak Out Finals on Tuesday 3rd February, showcasing the outstanding communication skills of our students. This event celebrated young voices from across the borough, providing a platform for students to share uplifting speeches and demonstrate their public speaking prowess.
This year, one of our key focuses as a school is on Oracy. Students started the programme at the start of the academic year incorporating a full-day workshop led by a Speakers Trust trainer. The workshop featured structured, interactive exercises designed to develop students’ communication skills and encourage them to expand their comfort zones. Students received expert guidance on public speaking techniques before crafting and delivering their own speeches. Throughout that first day, every student had multiple opportunities to speak in front of their peers, culminating in an Assembly Final later in the term where they presented their speeches to fellow students and teachers.
The Assembly Final was a key part of the school’s oracy programme, allowing teachers to hear a wide variety of topics and styles before selecting representatives for the Regional Final. This event brings together the community and borough-wide participants to celebrate the power of young voices. Over 2,500 students participate annually, speaking to audiences of more than 75,000 students and teachers.
At the recent Regional Final, Hornsey School for Girls students Maysarah and Alycia delivered electrifying performances on stage. Although they did not progress beyond this stage, their efforts were celebrated by the school community as true winners. The event was graced by the presence of the Mayor of Haringey, who presented the awards to deserving participants.
Ms Lorde, English and Media teacher at Hornsey School for Girls, said, “It was a wonderful evening and the kids did a phenomenal job!” She, along with Ms Hussain and many supportive students, attended the event, reflecting the school’s commitment to fostering confidence and communication skills in its students.
We are dedicated to nurturing the personal development of our students alongside academic achievement. The school’s focus on oracy this year aligns with its broader mission to empower young people to express themselves clearly and confidently in all areas of life.
